Next city to visit was Gothenburg. I arrived in the late afternoon and this place immediately made a very good impression on me. It is a pretty large city with a rich student life, but on the same time it is calm surrounded by a lot of nature. My host this time, Angel, lives in a remote part of the town within walking distance of the large central park, but thanks to the excellent public transportation system existing in Gothenburg all important places can be reached within minutes.
After an interesting conversation I started to explore the city nightlife in Sweden together with her cousin who happened to live in the city centre. Just when you think at 21 you’ll be allowed to enter any place, you discover Sweden, were in some bars they have age limits to 23 or 25 in order gather people of similar age in certain pubs or clubs, so therefore no Irish pub that night. We then went to some awesome club that really confirmed the image I had from Sweden : stylish people and a fancy design of the place with a lot of special effects and some great electro music. I found it very remarkable when returning around 3 it was already getting light again, whereas in Poland it got light around 5 am. It’s pretty impressive to gradually see in increase in the length of the days and a shift in vegetation along the beautiful Scandinavian views from the train
Next day after another way too short night I went to explore the large central Park which is really worth a visit. It houses a zoo, which you can enter for free and some hills with a stunning view across the town. And they’ve got penguins! Time was really flying and before I knew it I had to rush towards the railway station to catch the train towards Oslo.

| Day 6 - Gothenburg |
Valentina, my host in Oslo, came to pick me up at Oslo Sentralstasjon. She’s an Italian girl from north of Italy and Erasmus student in Norway studying in the field of politics. Once again I realize what a great enrichment Erasmus has been for my life and we had lots of fun sharing our experiences of the past year. She also proved to be an excellent guide and took me round the town and all the places of interest. Oslo feels like a very spacious city and is pretty quite considering it is the capital of Norway Of course with only 4.5 Mio inhabitants and maybe more than ten times larger than Belgium this might be expected. I absolutely loved the atmosphere, in particular the central street (Karl-Johans gate) with every 100m or so performing musicians. Stortinget (the parliament) has a special shape, she told me, because the left and the right wings represent arms embracing the people and the main entrance consists of many doors symbolizing accessibility. The location is chosen for a reason too, since it is just across of the Royal palace (Just like in Brussels). The Slottet (Norwegian for royal palace), dating from the 19th century, is also a very impressive building. We went to have a drink (most expensive Carlsberg I ever drank) near the harbour at the lovely quay called Akker Brykke to watch the sun very slightly set. When we arrived at her place around 1 AM, still in the twilight, I was told this is as dark as it will get. For people that have been to the north before this might be quite normal, but if you experience this for the first time it is very intriguing. I hope next year I’ll be able to go all the way to the Polar circle around this date and see the midnightsun and maybe also work on the bet I made with the ETEAM students to get a Polar Bear sign at the island of Spitsbergen within the next 10 years.
Next day we went to Sognsvann (lake near the Olympic village built for winter Olympics in Oslo). Big difference with Finland here is that the lakes are surrounded by mountains, which really makes it even more beautiful as far as this is possible. The weather was excellent today so time to go for a swim I figured. It was pretty cold but swimming in ice cold water feels so great and I kind a was looking forward to go for a swim again in one of the Scandinavian lakes. Then I started to realize my train for Stockholm was due in less than 2 hours, but I really wanted to stay longer in Oslo, so I went first to the railwaystation to rebook my ticket. We went to see the fortress and had lunch in a nice restaurant after which it was already time to say goodbye, unfortunately. I then went to find my other hosts for the next night, Anette and her friend Malena, living completely on the other side of city. Once again I met some very interesting open minded people, just enjoying life. We went around to one of the islands surrounding the coast of Oslo with some stunning untouched nature and afterward went for a walk in the Vigelandpark, known for its many statues. You really start to lose all concept of time when it stays light so long and before we knew it, it was already 1 AM so we started to head home. Anette cooked us a wonderful meal and we watched the movie “Blood en Chocolate” after which only got about 1 hour and 30 minutes of sleep were left before I had to leave for the 7:25 train to Stockholm. I’m certainly going to miss Oslo, that’s for sure.
